Can sleeping make you lose weight? When it comes to weight loss, we often think of being more active and modifying our diets in order to see results. But did you know that getting enough sleep can also be a helpful tool in your weight loss strategy? According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, lack of sufficient sleep may compromise the efficacy of common weight-loss interventions. So, are you guilty of staying up past your bed time?

Sleeping for Weight Loss: The Facts

  • Lack of sleep “promotes hunger and appetite, which can cause excessive food intake”. So, missing out on sleep can easily play into you desiring more food than your body needs to properly function.
  • When you sleep, your body is hard at work building muscle while repairing and rejuvenating tissue. This is important because the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism. By not getting enough sleep, you may be compromising how effectively your body burns through calories, according to Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., who specializes in sleep.
  • You may also think that if you are awake for more hours, then you would be burning more calories. The trouble comes into play in many cases with late-night snackers. Many of us tend to make unhealthy food choices in the evening hours, and if your body does not need the food (energy) it will eventually be stored as body fat.

mansleeping_sleepweightlossAs if those were not good enough reasons to get the proper amount of sleep, the Sleep Foundation notes that not getting enough sleep is also linked to:

  • Increased risk of drowsy driving
  • Increased risk of diabetes and heart problems
  • Increased risk for psychiatric conditions including depression and substance abuse
  • Decreased ability to pay attention, react to signals or remember new information
  • Increase in body mass index or a greater likelihood of obesity due to an increased appetite

Not only can sleep affect your waistline, it can also affect your overall health and productivity. To avoid these common symptoms the Sleep Foundation recommends 7-8 hours of sleep each night. No matter how much sleep you’ve had, or how well rested you may be, during a weight loss journey we tend to suffer from low energy levels throughout the day. This is another time of the day that many of us choose unhealthy food options that are filled with carbohydrates and sugar for a quick pick-me-up.

In a 10 week published university clinical study in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition with sedentary men and women, the group who drank one Celsius per day experienced Significantly Better Results.
